Centre County Wills & Estates

  • Estate records have been recorded at the county level since the origin of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1682.


  • Before 1800, for the area now known as Centre County, estate records can be found in Cumberland, Huntingdon, Lycoming, Mifflin or Northumberland Counties.


  • Since 1800, estate records have been filed with the Centre County Register of Wills located at the Willowbank Building in Bellefonte, or its predecessor office.


  • Centre County's original will and estate file documents 1800-1990 can be found at the Centre County Library and Historical Museum in Bellefonte. This includes the County's earliest estate files which may include wills, but often are established for persons intestate (without the deceased having left a will). An index can be found at the Pennsylvania Room of the Library.


  • Abstract of Wills, Centre County, Pennsylvania, December 8, 1800 to November 19, 1853 by Ira Fravel (1939) is available online for free through Archive.org.


  • Wills of Centre County, Pa., 1800-1853, by Ira Fravel, 1939, re-copied by Mary B. Lontz, 1967 is available online for free through FamilySearch (registration required).


  • Some Centre County wills and estate files are available online for a fee per click through Centre County Government's Register of Wills - WEBIA (Web Information Access).


  • New - Some Centre County will and estate/probate image files are available online for free through FamilySearch (registration required). These are not yet indexed but you can find individuals by doing a FamilySearch full text search.


  • Centre County Wills can be posted online and searched:
      • Some of the names include Robb, Craig, Gardner, Hull, McGhee, Ream, and Young.
      • To see only Wills from the Centre County Message Board:
        • From the Message Board, click "Centre - Family History & Genealogy Message Board" and "Advanced Search."
        • From the Message Classification pull-down menu, select "Will."
